While we’d like to stick to more upbeat stories here at IGDA Las Vegas, some days the news just isn’t good. Yesterday was one of those days.

The crew at Petroglyph was hit with layoffs on Tuesday, with about 25% of the employees let go. Being laid off is never a fun process, but when it happens in a town without multiple large studios to absorb those that lost their jobs, it’s even worse, and suddenly potential becomes uncertainty.

One of our primary goals here is to help raise awareness of the local game development scene and foster communication and collaboration between the developers that call Las Vegas home. With that in mind, if any of you reading this from other studios have positions open, please contact us and we’ll get them posted immediately.

Additionally, if you were laid off, post a link to your resume and the sort of work you are looking for here or within the IGDA Las Vegas Facebook group. We’ll make sure it’s seen.

Update! Here’s the full release issued by Petroglyph:

“Petroglyph Games Inc., an innovative studio that has created and launched multiple successful games over the years, has concluded its work as developer on End of Nations™ for publisher Trion Worlds. As a result, Petroglyph has reduced its workforce by 19 employees.

The team at Petroglyph is very excited about End of Nations, a title which earned more than 50 nominations and awards while in development, and looks forward to its upcoming release.

Additionally, Petroglyph recently moved into a larger facility in Las Vegas to house its current headcount of over 90 employees. Development work continues on multiple projects across different genres and platforms, both internally and externally funded, with releases planned through 2014.”

Nine years and a solid suite of games later, Petroglyph is still going strong, with over a 100 developers on the roster.

It’s that time again!

But from here on out we’re mixing things up a bit.

New presentations! Now, instead of holding the meetings as a casual drink and say hello sort of event, we’re gonna start each one off with a game industry presentation, followed by Q&A, and finally capped off with a bit of drinking and saying hello.

New location! We’re moving a couple doors over, to /usr/lib, a downtown tech library and coworking venue. Located on the second floor of the Emergency Arts building (above The Beat coffeehouse), this gives us access to actual meeting space and neat things like projectors. Plus, they sell beer downstairs!

October 2012 IGDA Las Vegas Meetup
Saturday, October 27th
2:00pm – 4:00pm

Speaker:
Rade Stojsavljevic (Jet Set Games, Sony, Activision, EA) on the state of the game industry, mobile, PC, and console game development, and trends for 2013.

/usr/lib
520 E. Fremont St.
Second Floor
Las Vegas, NV 89101

Anyone currently involved in local game development or interested in networking with local game developers is welcome to join us. The meetups are open to all, and IGDA membership is not required. Come on down and listen to the presentation, ask questions, and grab a beer or two with us!

From the blog post:

On October 20th GarageGames employees will be participating in a 24 hour gaming marathon to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through the Extra Life organization.

Here at GarageGames we know we have ‘dream jobs’ and we don’t take that for granted. Whenever someone is having a bad day or when a stressful deadline is fast approaching we generally do a good job taking a step back and realizing that working on video game software is a pretty good way to make a living. We are always looking for ways to give back to both the local Las Vegas community and the global gaming community when we can.

Locally here in Vegas we are partnering with the video game themed nightclub Insert Coin(s) from 4PM to Midnight or later. Insert Coin(s) is located downtown at 512 Fremont Street at local Vegas gamers can come join us for games, drinks, and raffle prizes. Anyone donating $15 at the door will get a commemorative t-shirt(while supplies last).

Hit up the fundraiser page and help the GG team out, and don’t forget to drop by Insert Coin(s) on the 20th!
